1. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order by Jonathan Frazier at 18:15.

  • Welcome and introductions.

  • Review of meeting objectives.

2. Approval of Previous Meeting Minutes and Agenda

Motion: To approve the April 28, 2026 Executive Meeting Minutes.

Agenda Amendment: Lesley Stav requested the addition of Canva renewal under New Business. Jonathan confirmed that NVICA currently uses Canva and recommended renewing the subscription.

3. Financial Report

Ronald St-Pierre was absent; therefore, no Treasurer’s Report was presented.

  • Treasurer’s update deferred to the next meeting.

  • Outstanding Western Conference expenses to be reviewed at the next meeting.

4. Membership Report

James Derry was absent; therefore, no formal membership report was presented.

  • Lesley Stav spent a day with Tammy Williamson and her students. Several students have registered with NVICA, and additional memberships may follow.

  • Buddy Wolfe suggested encouraging restaurants to support their chefs by covering NVICA membership fees. He also suggested utilizing participating restaurants as potential venues for future Chef’s Night Out events.

  • Members agreed this initiative may help increase membership and engagement within the local culinary community.

  • Jonathan Frazier suggested forming a committee to explore this opportunity further. Taylore will be invited to participate.

Action Item: Jonathan Frazier to explore establishing a committee to investigate restaurant-supported memberships.

5. Event Planning and Updates

Quadra Island Trip – May 3 Review

  • The event was very successful.

  • Members thanked Simon Martin for bringing colleagues to the event and helping attract younger chefs.

Japanese Cuisine Workshop – May 20 (VIU) Review

  • The workshop was well attended and highly informative.

Installation Dinner – June 15 Update

  • Lesley Stav reported that Jill at Shorewolf Farm is pleased to host the event.

  • Weather may present challenges, and additional tables may be required.

  • Jill does not have catering equipment available on-site.

  • Kevin Moore will coordinate tables and chairs.

  • Sausages, peppers, and onions will be provided.

  • Eleven people have confirmed attendance, with four additional registrations expected.

  • Jonathan Frazier will provide clear plastic glasses.

  • The menu includes pasta, meatballs, sausages, and focaccia bread.

  • A farm tour led by Jill will begin at 5:30 p.m.

  • Erin will coordinate the raffle draw

  • Scholarship Committee will present Scholarship 

6. Community Outreach and Fundraising

Volunteer Nanaimo Lunch

  • Discussion began regarding participation in next year’s Nanaimo Volunteer Lunch.

  • The proposed theme is “Pyjama Party.”

  • Frittata was suggested as a menu item.

  • The event may provide an opportunity to raise approximately $2,000.

Hospice Dinner

  • The Hospice Society has expressed interest in NVICA taking a larger role in the event.

  • Discussions are ongoing with Kevin Moore.

  • Members discussed the potential for the event to generate funds for NVICA scholarships.

  • It was noted that NVICA brings valuable culinary expertise to the event.

Action Item: Kevin Moore will follow up with the Hospice Society regarding future planning and fundraising opportunities.

7. Committee Reports

Scholarship and Bursary Committee

  • Buddy Wolfe and Lesley Stav are serving on the committee.

  • Tammy Williamson has agreed with the current scholarship selections.

Cookbook Project

  • The Farmers’ Market Cookbook project currently includes 117 recipes.

  • Information has been forwarded to Twila from the Farmers’ Market.

8. New Business

Fundraising Opportunities

  • Freezer Raffle: Preparatory work has already been completed for a fall fundraiser. Check with Ronald for more info.

  • Fundraising Dinner: Members agreed that a dinner event could be an effective fundraiser. NIC Port Alberni August 2026, Blue Moon Vineyard and Nanaimo for dinners

  • Garage Sale: An online garage sale was discussed as a possibility. Lesley Stav will investigate interest and feasibility.

Canva Renewal

  • Members discussed renewing the Canva subscription currently used by NVICA.

National Database

  • Discussion took place regarding the development of a national database that will provide resources and information to assist in operating culinary associations. Will be available soon

Food Day Canada – September 26, 2026

  • Discussion took place regarding participation in The Harvest Table: A Taste of Vancouver Island in the Cowichan Valley.

  • Tammy Williamson expressed interest and requested additional information.

  • Members noted that only three Food Day Canada events are being held nationally, with one taking place on Vancouver Island.

40 Knots Dinner – September 26, 2026

  • Members discussed participation in the Avi event at 40 Knots.

Western Conference 2027

  • Confirmation was received that the 2027 Western Conference will be held in Lethbridge. Either March or May
