NVICA President’s New Letter – October 2025
Hello everyone,
It’s been a full and inspiring fall for the North Vancouver Island Culinary Association, and I want to start by saying thank you to everyone who’s been involved. It’s been amazing to see so many members step up, support events, and bring energy to our branch.
We kicked off October with a community lunch at St. Peter’s Church in Comox, serving more than 75 guests. A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and talent — the event really captured what NVICA is all about: community, connection, and sharing food with purpose.
The Culinary Commons opened in Vancouver — if you’re ever in the area, it’s well worth a visit. It’s a fantastic space filled with culinary history, cookbooks, and inspiration from chefs across B.C.
We also got out into the forest for a foraging tour in true West Coast fashion — rain and all — exploring local mushrooms and learning from the team of Forest for Dinner.
In partnership with Chef Avi Sternberg and the BC Shellfish Association, we supported the Vines & Tides Dinner at 40 Knots Winery. In exchange for our help, Chef Avi will be leading a Japanese cooking workshop for NVICA members at VIU next May — something we’re all looking forward to.
We were proud to support Culinary Team Canada here on the Island — a rare opportunity to see our national team in action! They appeared at 40 Knots Winery in Comox (Nov. 1) and Naturally Pacific Resort in Campbell River (Nov. 3), with proceeds going toward their training for Expogast 2026 and the 2028 Culinary Olympics
NVICA continues to be an active voice in The Great Alignment, a province-wide collaboration between culinary associations and the BC Chefs’ Table. Together, we’re working to strengthen advocacy, create new opportunities, and support professional development for chefs and students across B.C.
We’re also keeping close watch on the proposed Professional Cook Program changes from SkilledTradesBC. There are concerns about reduced classroom time and funding cuts, and we’re collaborating with other associations to ensure the voices of chefs, educators, and students are heard and respected.
Don’t forget — nominations are now open for the NVICA Awards! This is your chance to celebrate the chefs, young chefs, and associates who’ve gone above and beyond this year. Take a moment to nominate someone who’s made a difference — it’s one of the best ways to recognize the incredible work happening in our community.
The Island Taste Trail is also happening this month — be sure to share it with your friends and family! It’s a great showcase of the producers, chefs, and restaurants that make our region such a vibrant food destination.
We’ll be back at the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market for Food Fest on November 22, focusing on “Back to Basics: The Perfect Christmas Dinner.” (Hint — start planning in November!)
Looking ahead, our NVICA social at Embers Wine & Charcuterie Cellar in Nanaimo is coming up on November 19. We’re proposing a 6:00 PM start, with Guest Speaker: Bill Clay of Bodhi’s Bakery. It’s shaping up to be a great night of food, wine, and connection.
Thank you again for your continued support, enthusiasm, and teamwork. Together, we’re building something special here on the North Island — one event, one meal, and one connection at a time.
See you soon,
Jonathan Frazier
